Preserving the past for future generations
Welcome to the Cumberland County Archives and Family Heritage Center. As a county archive, we serve as the official repository of governmental records. We ensure that these documents are cleaned, sorted, and preserved within our climate controlled vault. Records are available upon request according to Tennessee state law.
In November 1855, the Tennessee State Assembly allocated portions of Bledsoe, Morgan, Rhea, White, Putnam, Fentress, and Roane counties to form what is now Cumberland County. By maintaining a written history of our region, we hope to honor those first families and the many generations since, that have grown and shaped our community.
We are ardent supporters of preserving local organizations and family photographs, events, and achievements. Our archives provide a window into our past detailing how our communities, families, and organizations evolved over time. The Cumberland County Archives are an excellent resource for historical and regional research. Our reading room houses numerous books and journals with topics ranging from military, state histories, biographies, and genealogy.
Our Family Heritage Center is a vital resource for those interested in discovering their family history. Genealogy research helps us connect with our ancestors, to better understand their way of life and how family traditions became established.
Our reading room is staffed with volunteers experienced in genealogy research. Patrons can utilize our spacious individual computer stations that offer free access to several online genealogical websites and indexes. Visitors to our Heritage Center will appreciate our large collection of microfilm, along with a modern computerized reader. Patrons also have access to digital photos, family files, and obituaries. Photo copies are available for a nominal fee.
For those seeking to better understand genealogy research, we offer free courses and seminars throughout the year. Our staff members are also available for speaking engagements with local organizations and community groups. For information regarding classes, programs, or events, please consider signing up to receive our monthly newsletter. Details can also be found on our social media pages. Contact us via phone or email for further details.
